AbstractAugmented Reality has been a topic of research and development since the 1970s. The idea is to overlay virtual 2D and 3D objects on to the real world to enhance it. In this capstone project, an attempt is made to use this technology for the purpose of virtual interior decoration. With the help of an Android device equipped with a camera, virtual 3D models of furniture are overlaid on an AR marker printed on a paper and displayed on the device screen. This capstone project application thus enables users to visualize 3D objects as they would look if placed in the real world. The techniques used to do this include template matching, edge detection, vanishing point calculation for surface detection, and Android programming. Touch based placement of the 3D object via Android gesture handling is also implemented in this project for a static snapshot of the environment. Augmented stills can be later saved into the device’s gallery. The application project was successful) in these aspects. The gesture based placement of objects over live camera feed was unsuccessful due to limitations of the Metaio AR library used in this project. This feature could be added in the future with further development. The marker tracking algorithm could also be improved to increase the frame rate
