AbstractThe economy of the Lao PDR has a small industrial base and relies heavily on agricultural sector. Under the New Economic Mechanism, the market oriented-system, sine 1986, the Lao economy has grown gradually. This reform has promoted the production growth, the emergence of a small private sector, and increased foreign direct investment a trade flows, particularly with neighbouring countries. Although exports and imports have increased progressively, the trade deficit was still high in the beginning of year 1997. In 1997 , the economic crisis in the Lao PDR as well as in other countries of South East Asia has implied a depreciation of the Kip, the Lao currency, which, somehow, has affected the international trade of the country. In order to put this effect into a positive mam and reinforce the competitiveness and the development of Lao international trade, a study was conducted to examine the impacts of the Kip’s depreciation on the international trade and to determine factors that have caused a negative impact, and the way to improve the trade balance. The examination of the balance of payment, and the characteristics of the Lao international trade has led to an assessment of the external trade and suggestions for a short and long run to the government in some economic policies, which have a direct or indirect influence to the international trade.
