AbstractIP telephony or Internet telephony is a general term that applies to real-time voice services delivered over the IP network or Internet. The network will try to deliver the Internet protocol (IP) datagrams at their destination, but no guarantees are given. Since the voice packets are to be transmitted in real-time environment, various problems such as a long delay and a high loss rate may arise in such a packet voice communication system. QoS parameters for the IP telephony includes delays, delay variation, and loss in the quality of voice transmission. Among these types of QoS parameters, voice delay is the most crucial. To preserve the integrity of a conversation, voice packets must be delivered within 150-200 ms time bound. IP telephony service in Thailand is providing by The Telephone Organization of Thailand (TOT). TOT's IP telephony network should have some methodology and mechanism to investigate and measuremtn of the network performance and also guaranteed the quality of service for their users. In this study, first, we estimates and plans the number of voice channels required for serve the IP telephony traffic. Second, we investigate the QoS in term of delay (such as gateway delay and IP network delay) and evaluate the optimum value of some network parameters (such as packet size, number of node, number of voice channel, voice coder speed) to make total end-to-end delays meet their delay objective. Third, we apply some mechanism such as Weight Fair Queuing (WFQ) to guarantee delay bound and investigate the performance by the network throughput based on TOT's IP telephony system and network architecture.
