AbstractA review of the various types of handpump commonly used, at present, in Thailand was carried out to compare their advantages and disadvantages. Special attention was given on the components sf the handnump's cylindrical assembly which accounted for most of the handpump failure in Thailand: Criteria for improving these existing handpumps were discussed. In addition, a new design handpump”Waterloo Handpump”which has the advantages of better performance and lower cost of material. Therefore the use of Waterloo Handpump is recommended as an alternative to the existing handpumps. It is expected that the Waterloo Handpump will provide a very good balance of low initial cost, reliability, ease of repair efficiency and ease of operation.
