AbstractThis thesis is an experimental study whose purpose is to establish criteria for the selection of the minimum conduit diameter of shaft spillways. The aim is to determine this diameter for given values of discharge and height of water fall. The Froude number plays an all important role in the design of this type of hydraulic structureo In the experiments, the range of Froude number was not as large as expected. Nevertheless, the design of the apparatus was sound in principle and the results obtained were quite consistent. In any future study it is recommended that lower values of FrOude numbers be studied in order to correspond more closely with prototype values. It is believed that the results obtained in this study will be helpful in making more rational designs of shaft spillways in the future.
