AbstractThe purpose of this study is to develop a new kind of cementitious material, under normal temperature condition, based on calcareous and siliceous raw materials interground together. Limestone, marl, shale and rice husk ash(RHA) were used as raw materials in the production of cementitious material. An experimental program was conducted to determine the chemical composition of raw materials and lime-RHA cement, optimum ratio of marl-RHA mix, setting times of lime-RHA paste, input charge of cementitious material, grinding duration, the optimum dosage of shale and gypsum and the effect of variation of water/cement ratio. The mechanical properties which were studied include compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of rupture. In addition, its resistance against acidic attack was examined. The results indicate that marl can not be used as calcareous material in making cementitious material. The optimum ratio of lime-RHA mix which gives the maximum compressive strength of lime-RHA mortar having the same workability is 1:2. The addition of gypsum at a dosage 2.5 percent of total cementitious material by weight produced the highest compressive strength of lime-RHA mortar, comparing with pure lime-rice husk ash mortar the percentage increase is 23%. If 2.5% of gypsum is used as an additive in lime-RHA concrete having lime:RHA=1:2 and a design strength 20 MPa, its compressive strength is slightly.
