AbstractThe performance of a draft control system was compared with a slip control system and a combined 'slip and draft' control system. For the draft control, a commercial draft control system was used. A microcomputer controlled electro hydraulic system fitted to the tractor was used in slip control and 'slip and draft' control. The travel speed and depth were measured using a fifth wheel. Transducers were developed for measuring draft and torque. A data processing system was developed to process and store the field data. Tests were conducted with the three systems individually to find out the best parameter selection for each system. The parameters considered were the set levels of draft and slip, dead band, frequency of draft control, frequency of slip control, rate of lowering and rate of lifting, speed and moisture content of the soil. A direct comparison test was conducted with all the three systems tested using their best setting of parameters. The draft control system controlled the draft (at high set draft levels only) and depth better than the other two systems. The 'slip and draft' control system resulted in best overall control of draft, depth and slip. The efficiency of the 'slip and draft' control was higher than the other two systems. The efficiency of slip control system was in between the draft control and the 'slip and draft' control systems.
