AbstractAn object-oriented framework has been proposed for the conceptual analysis of model management. It consists of two parts; a conceptual structure for the representation of decision models; and a set of high level manipulation operators for the access, retrieval and updating of decision models in a model base system. In order to support the proposed framework, an object-oriented model management system has been designed and implemented by the relational data dictionary approach. The system includes three components: a set of relation; a model definition language; and a model manipulation language.Based on the proposed framework, a design theory, including the normalization theory, inheritance rules and an inheritance theory, has been developed for the conceptual design of model base systems. As a result, an inheritance rule checking system has been designed and implemented in order to check the correctness of model specification, to enhance the applicability of the framework and to find out the inheritance relationship between two classes. The proposed framework emphasizes the concepts of data abstraction, information hiding and inheritance. It provides a suitable structure to guarantee the quality of model class specification. In addition, inheritance specifies well the relationship for the reuse of decision models, which helps to reduce redundancy and avoid inconsistency in the conceptual analysis of model management
