AbstractAn experimental program consisting of tests on rectangular slabs under cylindrical bending and circular slabs under central load applied through a boss was carried out to study the load deformation behavior of ferrocement slabs. The experimental results showed that ferrocement slabs under transverse loads exhibit the properties of an elastic- strain hardening material with a limit surface. The moment curvature relations of a ferrocement section were de rived on the assumption that the wire mesh yields as soon as it is impinged by a crack. These moment curvature relations led to an idea lized trilinear moment curvature curve which was used in the analytical study. The load-deformation behavior up to the ultimate loads of the rectangular slabs under cylindrical bending were predicted by means of this trilinear analysis. The comparison of the theoretical results and experimentally obtained values were shown to be satisfactory. For the circular slabs under central load applied through a boss, the trilinear analysis was used to predict the deflections up to the load level beyond which non regular progression of stress points oc- curred. The laborious and time consuming calculations associated with the solution involving non regular progression of stress points was avoided by the observation that, at higher load range, the deflections of the ferrocement slabs can be approximated by an elastic perfectly plastic bilinear analysis. The experimental results indicated that the composite load deflection curves constructed by joining the two segments obtained by the trilinear and bilinear analyses give a good approximation of the load deformation behavior of the circular ferrocement slabs.
