AbstractThis study deals with an analytical and experimental investigation of the mechanical prOperties of fiber reinforced cement paste composites in the uncracked and cracked range. The fiber selected for the study is bamboo, in which the beneficial effects of bamboo pulp in improving the first crack strength of the composite and bamboo fibers in providing the post-cracking ductility in direct tension and flexure are identified. Analytically, the material is treated as a composite where cement paste is the matrix and the pr0perties of the composite are derived by the law of mixtures. The effects of random orientation and finite length of the fibers, properties of the constituent material, and interfacial bond stress between the matrix and the fibers are taken into considera~ tion. Certain assumptions are made concerning the orientation and dis- tribution of the fibers to simplify the analysis. Explicit expressions are given for the mechanical properties of the material in compression, tension, bending and torsion, respectively. The minimum volume fraction of each type of fiber, as well as an Optimum mix prOportion between bam— boo pulp and fibers, are suggested for the various composites being studied to attain Specified mechanical properties. Experiments were conducted to verify the analytical predictions and tests were also made to evaluate the performance of the materials with regard to water ab- sorption, drying shrinkage, impact resistance, permeability, combusti- bility and durability. The test results indicate that, for building boards, bamboo pulp and bamboo fibers are promising substitutes for aSbestos fibers, es- pecially in developing countries where bamboo is abundant and cheap.
