AbstractA numerical model based on the finite element technique is developed to determine (a) the steady fresh water discharge to the sea and (b) the location of the free surface and the interface in an uncon— fined coastal aquifer of infinite depth. The technique employed varia- tional approach to obtain a numerical solution to the flow problems. The problem of drawdown of the free surface and upconing of the interface below an infiltration gallery withdrawing water from the aquifer is analysed by considering different locations of the gallery within the flow domain. The results of investigation are presented in the form of dimen— sionless plots, which can be used for planning and designing a water with— drawal scheme. The finite element solutiOn is compared with Glover's exact solution for the interface location and with the approximate solution based on Dupuit assumptions and the Ghyben—Herzberg approximation for the normal case without gallery. For the upcoming case, the physical boundaries of the flow domain given by the finite element solution for different water withdrawal ratios are compared with those given by the Dupuit solution, and discrepancies in the results are discussed. The applicability of the results of the analysis for anisotropic media with proper change of the axes of the plots is also mentioned.
