AbstractMeasurements of discharge in natural channels are most conveniently obtained using head—discharge relationships for control structure through which the flow passes. A method is described whereby these characteristics for a given control structure can be obtained by a single experimental oper— ation referred to as the falling head method. The method uses measurements of the decreasing water surface level behind the control structure where water is stored behind the opening of the structure and then suddenly re— leased. A theoretical and experimental investigation is made to determine the conditions under which the falling head method can be used. Effects of friction, channel irregularities and geometry, gate opening time and time interval between successive water level measurements are investigated. The results indicate that the falling head method can be applied to control structures for obtaining head—discharge relationships but that the accuracy of the resulting head—discharge curve depends upon the conditions under which the tests were conducted.
