Abstract | A probabilistic model is introduced to solve the storage problems with serially correlated stochastic inflows, both on monthly and yearly bases, and with complex release rules. The model is basically derived from the "two-step model" of klemes (1970) by modifying its formulation. In addition to this, computational manipulations are also devised to make the model practicable and economical by reducing the required computer core storage and computer CPU time, as well as computer elapse time. Using the above model as the basis, the methods for estimating the reliability of reservoir storage are proposed for the following cases: (i) independent or serially correlated annual inflows (monthly inflows are assumed to be serially correlated); (ii) synthetic inflows generated from a two-step data generation model which is composed of a first- order Markov model and a disaggregation model; and (iii) a water resources system with and imposed chance constraint where two approaches are suggested; firstly, the actual releases are assumed to follow the optimum operating policy, which is derived by using stochastic dynamic programming, and secondly, they are considered to follow the demand pattern. Applications are also illustrated to prove the effectiveness of the proposed model and the associated approaches. The Pa Mong project on the basic data are available for a relatively long period. Finally, a summary is given as guidance for the use of the model in different practical situations. |
