AbstractPoint symbol in cartography has been evolved into various patterns in order to response to presentation objective efficiently. One distinctive pattern o f p oint symbol is multi - variates presentation that is used widely i n the form of graph or we called Location - based Graph Symbol (LGS) which represents statistics data with reference to spatial data. It is widely used in GIS, a computer based system that allows users to define or interact with various representative symbol s selection. However, from the preliminary study, we have found major problems for viewers with perception and understanding to the symbol. The fact is that human’s vision has different recognitive perception to various graphic with many pros and cons to e ach graphic for example length, area, angle and colour . Therefore, there is definitely one suitable graphic available for information representation via LGS. Thus, we have initiated an interest in the study of human factor which contributes to human perce ption in terms of LGS. The researcher has foreseen that the existing use of the LGS is far more complex than viewer’s perception to facilitate the understanding of the real objective of the specific informative presentation, efficiently. Even though, the research aims to design a new prototype, but it requires effort for many observation, research and experiment for the part that lacks of supported theory and proven record when identifying problems at the beginning of the study. Thus, it could be said that this study is classified as a pilot study (low level research) in order to construct a basic knowledge to support the mentioned phenomenon and research for the new possibility of new symbol prototype from the new knowledge. This dissertation has studied m echanisms of human visual perception that are necessary to understand LGS and analyze the suitable characteristics and properties symbol that fit the purpose of graphic representation . Then, the exp eriment to test the new symbol prototype’s representation is designed and modify the design to find the most suitable properties. The expected outcome of this study is that viewer can understand presented information through selected/designed LGS better than the existing ones. The design shall be based on the fun damental of LGS and bring out the characters and properties of LGS structure from their original patterns by means of the study of pros, cons and suitability including modification of the graphic structure and property in order to create a better LGS prot otype.
