| Abstract | This study takes theresource-based view (RBV) theoryin a new direction by investigatingthe role that four key resources (organizational reputation; human resource management (HRM) practices; networks and vertical integration in production) play as sources of sustained competitive performance for rice milling firms in Thailand. RBV has been a useful tool for decades but has only rarely been applied to the context of agribusiness in an emerging economy. Since Thailand plays such a critical role in the world rice market, this study fills a significant research gap by examining how these resources affect organizational performance inspecific agribusiness firms in Thailand‘s rice industry.By using the regression technique, organizational reputation, some HRM practices, and networks were found to be significantly related to a firm‘s performance. Vertical integration in production was not found to be significantly related. In order to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage (SCA), a firm needs to build a good reputation and maintain it. Well managed HRM practices were found to enhance a firm‘s competitiveness, and firms should also be concerned about their relationships with their partners. This study confirms that the way a firm handles specific resources can be a source of SCA and makes a unique contribution to strategic management literature by showing how this works in the context of Thailand‘s rice industry. |
