Abstract | This research examines the association of co - authorship network centrality (degree, closeness and betweenness ) and the academic research performance of Chemistry researchers in Pakistan. Higher network centrality in the co - authorship network is hypothesized to be positively related to performance, in terms of academic publication s , with individual and work relate d characteristics (gender, academic a ge and institutional sector ) having positive moderating effect s for female researchers, junior faculty members and faculty members employed in private universities/ research institutes respectively . Using Social Network Analysis (SNA), this study examines the bibliometric data (2002 - 2009) from ISI Web of Science for the domestic co - authorship network of 2,027 Paki stani authors publishing in Chemistry and its sub - fields . Two models are developed and tested. Model 1 is tes ted to investigate the moderating impact of gender for almost all researchers in the largest con nected component. M odel 2 is tested to investigate the moderating impact of gender, academic age and institutional sector (from CV’s) for faculty members w ith in the network . Findings from model 1 A non - temporal analysis using OLS - regression reports positive impact of degree and closeness and negative impact of betweenness centrality on research performance. Te mporal analysis using OLS - regression (time 1: 2002 - 2005; time 2: 2006 - 2009) confirms the direction of potential causality and demonstrates the positive association of degree and closeness centrality on research performance. Fin di ngs indicate a moderating effect of gender on the relationship of both de gree and closeness centrality with research performance for Pakistani female authors. Findings from model 2 A non - temporal analysis using OLS - regression repor ts positive impact of degree centrality and negative and insignificant impact of closeness and betweenness centrality on research performance for faculty members with in the network . Tem poral analysis using OLS - regression (time 1: 2002 - 2005; time 2: 2006 - 2009) confirms the direction of potential causality and demonstrates the positive association of degree centrality on research performance for faculty members with in the network . Findings indicate a moderat ing role of academic age and institutional sector on the relationship of degree centrality with research performa nce for Pakist ani junior faculty members and f aculty members employed in private sector universities/research institutes . |
