Abstract | Home-based enterprises (HBEs) are a subset of the u rban informal sector. They are sympathetically viewed by urban authorities as live lihood activities of the urban poor. Therefore, they are not subjected to stringent regu latory measures. Shop-house enterprises (SHEs) are a subset of HBEs. However they are neith er informal enterprises nor the livelihood activities of the urban poor. Since they are located in buildings legitimized for residential and commercial activities, they hold qu asi-formal status. The study investigated the possible environmental and health aspects emana ting from SHEs due to this quasi- formal status. The study aimed at identifying the w ays to overcome the formal-informal dichotomy of SHEs through concerted implementation of environmental management measures (EMMs) for the benefit of the urban sector . Based on the perceptions of direct and indirect sta keholders of shop-house enterprises (SHEs), the study assessed the environmental and he alth impacts created by SHEs. The study also examined the factors that contribute to those impacts and scrutinized the extent of implementing the existing environmental manageme nt measures (EMMs) against the microenterprises located in shop-houses and the enc umbrances for effective monitoring and management of the environmental performances of SHEs. The empirical part of the study was carried out in 4 districts of Bangkok Met ropolitan Area in Thailand. The primary data for the study was collected as percept ion data from direct stakeholders of SHEs (i.e. shop-house entrepreneurs and environment al managers of BMA’s district offices) and indirect stakeholders (i.e., people in the vicinity of SHEs and researchers engaged in urban environmental issues). Questionnai re-based interview of stakeholders was used as the principal method for data collectio n. A purposive method was used to identify respondents. Actual measurement of the env ironmental qualities in few selected SHEs was done to verify the findings of the percept ion based surveys... |
