Abstract | n the recent years many failures of large power transformers especially due to improper maintenance have been noted in our country. As a result of this the total financial loss due to improper maintenance of power transformers has been estimated to be several hundred million rupees per annum. In view of enormity of this problem, the maintenance engineers from various power stations and utilities are seriously reconsidering their O & M procedures and trying to identify the lapses if any, on their part.In today’s competitive world, power utilities have no choice but to cut down their maintenance costs, as they form a significant portion of the operation costs. This has led to adopt condition based maintenance of the equipments rather than usual preventive maintenance being carried out at a fixed interval of time. Maintenance intervals are normally fixed based on type of equipment and sometimes on the equipment history. However, tests or measurements are also carried out to assess the condition of the equipment. The existing standard operating procedures use in LESCO for maintenance of power transformers, the deficiencies in it will be explained in detail. The need of improved maintenance procedures for power transformers and their significance will also be discussed. |
