Abstract | The Pakistan is facing the worst power crisis of its history and the electric utilities of Pakistan has not been working efficiently due to the crisis and a number of other reasons including high T&D losses, overloaded infrastructure, least generation resources etc. This crisis will take its time to resolve and at the same time with the advent of 21st century, the world is entering into a new arena of smart grid. With this kind of situation, the power distribution companies of Pakistan cannot leapfrog to the smart grid technology on account of huge technology gap. This technology gap can be reduced only by introducing enterprise GIS for power distribution utilities. The enterprise GIS is a reliable technology which is being experienced for more than 20 years in the power utilities of the industrialized world. Although a very few utility companies (in Gas & Telecommunication sector) have adopted the GIS technology in Pakistan and the power sector utilities have just seen a glimpse of it through some donor agencies. With a systematic development of enterprise GIS in power sector utilities of Pakistan, the power distribution companies like Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) will not only improve their performance and fill their technology gap with the utilities across the world but will also improve their revenue generation to diminish their circular debt. After the successful implementation of GIS in conjunction with AMR technology, the distribution companies can also gradually lead towards the smart grid pathway. |
