Abstract | Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become the new buzzword and a key differentiator in international business. Socially responsible investors now aim to make companies accountable not only to shareholders and employees but also to all those affected by their operations. In this new corporate world of today, pressure from society will force corporations to increase their CSR activities in a big way and many companies have already understood this aspect. In addition, neo-institutionalism has externally codified rules, norms or laws which assign legitimacy to new management practices. Similarly self- regulatory and voluntary initiatives, most notably codes of conduct issued by bodies such as the UN, OCED (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), ILO (International Labor Organization) and the Global Reporting Initiatives are also seen as interconnecting developments. PCAL as a future global company will face similar problems and it is timely for PCAL to reflect and formulate strategies that will sustain it in the long run. The objectives of this project are to analyze negative impacts of PCAL's activities on the communities and understand its CSR policy, if any. The study also aims to find out the social and environmental initiatives taken by PCAL. In contrast to PCAL's contribution in the economic development of Bhutan, It has also created many adverse impacts on the society. Much has been written in recent years about CSR but Bhutan seems not to have applied such practices. Mainstreaming environmental concern is in the consciousness of Bhutanese society but there are no formal polices supporting such disciplines. The recommendations and conclusion in the: final chapter reflect the future directions that PCAL should embark on, that is to develop, certain CSR polices and responsibilities for its own actions. This will definitely add value to the, existing strengths and help the company to grow and be sustainable in the long run. This will also set an example to other companies in Bhutan who are on the same track of development. |
