Abstract | The early 1970's marked the birth of Sustainable Development, a concept that aims at finding development patterns that "meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". Over the last three decades, the United Nations and non-governmental organizations endorsed and promoted Sustainable Development to globalization's stakeholders, notably aimed at the businesses sphere, consequently raising and diversifying the number of stakeholders. Indeed, Sustainable Development is a way for companies to innovate and to implement great changes in their organization. Furthermore, businesses' involvement in Fair Trade and ethical commerce is not only a philanthropy since consumers are more and more concerned about responsible consumption and are ready to boycott unethical brands. Educated professionals and people living in urban areas are the most sensitive to these issues. Nevertheless, the sustainability of a brand or a product is neither the main nor the only buying criterion. In response to such an infatuation, businesses have many ways to react, which depends on their mission statement, their core business or the extent of their involvement. Therefore, there are many strategies to deal with Sustainable Development, whether it represents an opportunity, a threat or only an adaptation. The main challenges faced by companies will be to realign their mission, to identify their stakeholders and to rethink their economic, social, and environmental impact in order to remain profitable in the long run. |
