Abstract | During economic downturn, consumers are less confid ent in financial institutions and concerned whether their deposits are safe or not; t herefore, they may consider withdrawing their deposits from any particular bank. When bank struggles to meet consumer demands in withdrawing, it will become insolvent. Once one bank collapses, it can also arouse further panic and uncertainty, causing a banking panic. Hence, deposit insurance system, a promise to pay the amount promised by the bank with out suspension of convertibility, was created as an alternative way to reduce depositors panic and prevent bank run during financial crisis. This study attempts to demonstrate how the Institut e of Deposit Protection Act (IDPA) ,which have taken place since 11 st August 2008, affects banking sector in Thailand by focusing on the change in deposits flows and how ba nks adjust themselves. The study specifically examines the impact of the IDPA to Bangkok Bank, the largest bank in Thailand, by referencing the case research and prev ious incidents from other countries where the Act has been applied. As the result, Bang kok Bank has competitive advantage to generate more assets from gaining more deposits. Ho wever, it is required to create the new strategies in order to cope with the new changes. |
