AbstractPublic space is a key component in the urban space system and is indispensable in the urban structure. Public spaces contribute to perfecting and enhancing the quality of life for people in urban areas, thereby contributing an important part of improving the urban image. However, recent studies about public space in Vietnamese’s show that public spaces in some cities are currently lack and in poor quality. Among many reasons, lack of interest in investment and poor operational management are the main causes. Many public space development plans have shown less concerns public needs, community’s interests and participation, so do the physical and environmental aspects of spaces. The current research tries to answers the questions about the role of public spaces for urban images Ca Mau City? And how images of Ca Mau City can be enhanced by improving public space? Due to time constraints, the research chooses VTL area of Ward 5, Ca Mau City center a case study as, along with the water front; it is a dominant element of UPS in Ca Mau City. To address these questions, this study uses methods of direct observations, interviews, questionnaires survey, reviewing related documents, to study and offer solutions for UPS improvement. Approaching from the Urban Management discipline, the proposals mainly focus on the adjustment of VTL planning (the Design Brief) with changes on the planning aims, planning contents and land uses readjustment, and the management planning. The changes would turn VTL areas to a place for public benefits and help enhance the image of Ca Mau city via variety of spaces, activities and meanings it delivers after all.
