Abstract | Due to concern of negative impacts from introducti on of exotic fish species, the government of Laos has initiated to promote aquaculture of i ndigenous species. This study surveyed the exotic and indigenous fish species in two markets of Savannakhet province, Lao PDR using a structured questionnaire to understand the contribution of exotic and indigenous fish species in the food fish supply. Seventeen fish venders and sixty fish buyer s in Kaisone P homviharn district, Savannakhet province were interviewed during May 2011. There were twenty freshwater fish species sold in the two markets, Savansay and Samarkkysay market s. Wild fish caught by fishermen are th e major species sold in these tw o market s.Fish . Most of them were indigenous f ish species ( 90%) and only two fish species were exotic (10%). Walking catfish and snake head fish are representatives of indigenous fish and their mean total production per day were highest in both markets. However, production of Tilapia, a typical of exotic species, w as also very high. Market price of indigenous fish in these two markets is often higher, compared to the exotic species. Thicklipped barb (Probarbus labeamajor) , an indigenous species has the highest market price [average 65000 kip/kg(8.2$)] . Most buyers a greed that good tas te of indigenous fish was the major reason for popular consumption. |
