AbstractConstruction of new dams has been reduced due to lack of suitable sites. Because of increase in demand of water for energy, irrigation and other benefits, optimal operation of existing reservoirs is extremely important. Climate change and its possible hydrological effects are creating uncertainties in the availability and demand of water. In this study an effort is made to review the various techniques used for optimization of reservoir system, and then selection of a suitable technique for optimal operation of Tarbela reservoir, Pakistan under changing climatic condition. After reviewing various techniques already used for optimal operation of multipurpose reservoirs, it is concluded that dynamic programming can be efficiently applied for the optimization of Tarbela reservoir. Genetic algorithm and its application to different reservoir systems has explained in the study. The results obtained from various studies show that Genetic algorithm can be efficiently used for the optimization of single and multi reservoir systems. Hybrid techniques for optimal operation of reservoir are also explained. Summary of various studies conducted to assess climate change effects on water re- sources are also included in the report
