Abstract | Formative evaluation techniques are used to evaluate the usability issues in the interface design of website during design implementation phase in the early development process. Such kind of evaluation techniques help designer to generate improves interface design within reasonable amount of time and resources. It is better to use formative evaluation techniques to evaluate every interface design of the website to avoid usability problems after system implementation. This research study is focused on studying formative evaluation techniques namely Cognitive Walk through and Heuristic Evaluation to know their contribution in interface design implementation process. To get in-depth knowledge of those techniques, a case study is carried out. A case study is that current web-based student information system of AIT is evaluated by Heuristic Evaluation and Cognitive Walkthrough methods to find out the usability problems of the website’s interface design. The current students from CSIM/ICT field of study in AIT participated as evaluators in this case study. The designer generates two proposed designs: Design-1 and Design-2 after analyzing the evaluation results and design suggestions by evaluators. Design-1 is generated by eliminating the usability problems found in current web-based student information system of AIT. The design is produced based on evaluation results and evaluator’s suggestion on interface. Design-2 is the improved design of Design-1 based on evaluation results and suggestions by evaluators.Evaluation by both CW and HE is carried out at Design-1 and Design-2 to get better interface design. This research study identified the effectiveness of formative evaluation techniques in evaluating the usability of interface and their contribution to system designer in the early system design development process. |
