Abstract | Herbs have been used for centuries to cure sickness or to promote good health. Even though now we have modern medication, traditional herbal remedies are still widely accepted. The younger generation may not be so well informed about herbs, so using the internet is a good way for them to obtain this knowledge. Meanwhile the older generation might not use the internet often, but since this kind of information is now available on the internet, they might try to use the internet more. So, information about herb will be useful for both generations. Information about herbs can provide people with a basic knowledge which will allow them to treat and protect themselves from illness. This information is important for ordinary people, so the herb information system is valuable. It will help people to reduce the costs of healthcare. Therefore this information should be disseminated around the world. Thailand is one of the countries which is interested in herbal knowledge and there are several particular herbal websites from various organizations which have their own information. Such websites usually provide only basic information, so they cannot encourage people to participate in the websites. Therefore, a system which provides information about Thai herbs will be crucial for a feeling of social participation. The proposed system for providing information about Thai herbs is not only an information website, but also a community website which combines several systematic functions on the system. Furthermore, new technologies have been brought into this system as well. Resource Description Framework (RDF) is used to define all entities of Thai herbs, all of which are conveniently changed entities. Furthermore, RDF is also useful for linking Thai herbs to external datasets by using the Linking Open Drug Data (LODD). On the other hand, this system can retrieve information about herbs from LODD which corresponds to the binomial name of the herb in the system. |
