Abstract | Only 85% of the population in Laos has access to electricity and the government targets to reach over 90% population in the rural areas by 2020. Moreover, renewable energy is expected to increase by 30% in 2025. Solar is one of the alternative energy resources to reach this goal. Increase in renewable energy is one of main policy to develop the country which can be achieved by allowing private sectors to invest. The objective is to ensure energy security and sustain socio - economic development. This study is aimed to examine the status of users and evaluate the benefits from sol ar home system in rural areas like Phou koud district Laos. For this study, a survey in 77 households was conducted based on interview questionnaires and observations. We found that 74% of the household use SHS while 26% use both S HS and on - grid. Before the SHS, kerosene was popular; however, it was harmful and caused indoor pollution . Hence, people switched to SHS for convenience, safety and green resource. As per the survey, 36% of the household use 40W. While based on years of us e 52% have been using it for more than 10 years. The SHS was also installed mostly by public sectors than the private sectors. SHS has lot of social, economic, environmental benefits. This research highlights more on the social benefit. The cost of SHS is not much different from the kerosene, but the benefit from SHS is more than kerosene . With SHS, people could opt to work at night as well which increased their income by 0 - 5 USD per month for around 49% people and by 20 - 100 USD per month for 39% people . S HS also has environmental benefits as it helps to reduce accident s that was prone from kerosene and reduce d indoor air pollution which was also agreed by approximately 53% users . Most people also highly agreed that SHS improved their life and life became easier. |
