Series Statement
AbstractDifferent electric loads can be problematic for power quality in micro - grids but also micro - grid can offer more options for power quality management. Type of problems can be divided to either voltage level problems or harmonic problems. Devices emitting harmonics can be usually filtered to comply with power quality norms but more active approach might have to be taken if the load just draws too much current. The purpose of this research investigates how different types of loads are affecting the power quality in a micro - grid. Transient electrical simulation software, PSCAD and micro - grid simulation model is used for the study. Micro - grid model is connected to grid from a single point located on distribution transformer. Load types in a micro - grid simulation is compact fluorescent light (CFL), single - phase rectifier load, three - phase thyristor load and load single - phase motor. Also 20 kW three - phase static loads are used for the base case. A good quality filtering solution is determined that configuration the CFL adding LC filter and components found by simplex optimization. Exclusive of a filter there was small resonance with CFL and inverter when inverter was in voltage control mode. It is more difficult to present that three - phase transistor load is a high RMS value of the high level of harmonic distortion. Filtering solution is using LCL filter. Simplex optimization method did not work for inductors and capacitors. Adjustment is obtained to provide adequate filtering and reactive power compensation. The problem for a single - phase motor is that it draws high current at the beginning and also that there is very limited production per phase power inverter driven micro - grid solutions to complete the procedure selected device. Step load for single - phase load is spread evenly in all three phases. The device is called the phase jumper. The mitigating capability of these devices is mainly influenced by the loads; small resonance, harmonic distortion and maximum reactive power to be compensated. Comprehensive results are presented to assess the performance of each device to improve the power quality problems in micro - grid system. The simulation is carried out using PSCAD software. The outcome of this research is enable improved solutions of poor power quality to loads in micro - grid system and reduces damage of electrical devices
