Series Statement
AbstractAirborne particulate matter (PM) was investigated at Asian Institute of Technology. Two Sierra Anderson Dichotomous Samplers were used for the sampling of coarse (PM2.5-10) and fine (PM2.5) fractions over the periods of 24 hours. 16 pairs of samples were collected on each of the quartz fiber filters and mixed ester cellulose filter, during the period of 3rd February to 10th March 2009. Carbon Black was monitored by Continuous Online Soot Monitoring System (COSMOS) during the sampling period. Samples were analyzed for mass, ionic compositions and elemental compositions. Quartz filters were used for gravimetric analysis as well as ionic composition determination. Ion chromatography was the technique used for ionic analysis. Mixed ester cellulose filters were used for elemental analysis of the collected sample. Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) was used for elemental analysis. During the study period, PM and BC concentrations were found to be relatively high in the first half of the February, 2009. However, none of the samples exceeded the Thai National Ambient Air Quality Standards. Receptor Modeling was carried out using Chemical Mass Balance (CMB). Heavy duty bus was found to be major contributor of PM2.5-10, sharing almost 38 percent of the overall concentration. Biomass burning and diesel vehicle composite were two major contributors to PM2.5 with 49 and 26 percent shares respectively.
