Series Statement
AbstractSurveys for working environment at Vietnamese oil and gas installations showed that there was a significant ratio of people sustained hearing impairment and induced hearing loss. In Petroleum Vietnam Gas Company (PVGAS), for example, there are 10 - 15 people sustained hearing impairment and 1 - 2 people suffer ed from induced hearing loss in every 42 surveyed people . Similarly , an working environment survey for Vietsovpetro demonstrated a significant reduced hearing sensitivity with 7- 8% and 0 . 8 - 1% surveyed people . Nevertheless, many of the bad effects of noise caused by oil and gas operations have not been researched . Limit of scientific data does not mean that noise problems related to this area are not significant. Synthesis, analysis and assessment of noise impacts to people working in the industry are required to formulate a policy, regulations and guidance on the appropriate working schedule in noisy environment. This will be a basis for development and implementation of appropriate noise mitigation measures to protect workers from the adverse effects. A noise survey was also carried out at Dinh Co gas processing plant to assess the noise impact by using an integrated monitoring and modeling tool. Most of areas locating in the plant, the noise level was lower compared with Vietnamese standard except electric generator, inlet compression station, processing and utility areas. The survey also showed a correlation between questionnaire survey, medical check and noise mapping. Most of induced hearing loss people are working in high noise level areas which was signed warning in the map. The study recommended some mitigations to limit the noise impact including technical, personal protection, environmental monitoring and medical measures in which wearing muffs and plugs together , enclose the noise sources, and using high technology with remote operation are important measures to carry out
