Abstract | In the recent years, “green roofs and walls” concept development have received increasing attention in Vietnam, as sustainable construction becomes the main trend, encouraged by the government and the public. However, there is a lack of research and guidelines on their implementation in the local market. In order to promote green roofs and walls development, this research study reviewed available studies and guidelines from neighboring countries with relevant and similar conditions. The review has revealed a similarity between international practices and regional practices, which emphasizes the possibility of direct wide application in Southeast Asia. The study also investigated three green roof and wall projects across Vietnam. For each case study, interviews with buildings’ management team and landscape team of the projects w ere conducted in order to get a full picture on the pros and the cons of green roofs and walls implementation and operation. The cases have provided further evidence on further potential implementation, benefits and operation of green roofs and walls in buildings while pointing out limitations of prospective developers’ awareness, as well as available technologies, certain lack of skills and knowledge of the designers and operational teams. It also became evident that current high cost of green walls and roofs hinders the development on the Vietnamese market. Finally, the study suggests further research on existing applications of green roofs when data is available as well as a continued study on existing projects five years into operation. It is stressed that to promote the development of green walls and roofs in Vietnam, research studies should be undertaken with a broader scope in order to formulate specific technical guidelines for green roofs and walls in Vietnam. Further demonstrations of full - scale green wall and roof models need to be undertaken with a view to raising awareness of the public, as well as improving confidence of building professionals. |
