Abstract | This study explores how changes in survival strategies account for changes in gender roles during conflict displacement. Forced displacement has a differential impact on both women and men, which can differ at various stages of crisis. It provides an opportunity to ‘renegotiate’ gendered power structures, patriarchal norms and notions of masculinity and femininity. While ensuring the survival of their families in hostile and unfamiliar circumstances of displacement, women take up financial burden of providing for the family and assume non - traditional roles. This research study, however, suggests that displacement has provided new opportunities to women at the cost of adding up new roles into their tasks. Women’s increased economic responsibilities after displacement apparently seem to be temporary because conflict displacement has restricted men’s access to sources of power and wealth. They were unable to meet their traditional role of breadwinner and it required women to assume new responsibilities. No doubt, displacement has created some space to redefine gender norms; it is unable to fundamentally alter patriarchal biases and gendered power structures that are responsible for sustaining gender ideologies |
