AbstractIn nowadays worldwide market, applications might be used in different countries and by different culture. Therefore, companies in order to be “internationally” competitive need to be able to localize their applications. Localization is a process “culturally” impacted which addresses in particular the content of user interface but this content is much more than text and mere translation of it. Indeed , while some localization issues such as language and writing conventions have been widely addressed, further research is needed in understanding “deeper” cultural issues . Thus, this research aim ed at determining some of the influences of culture on user interface usability and their implications on localization strategies. To serve this purpose an online questionnaire was developed. This survey more specifically investigated the issues of Web icons versus text, Web icon design and the influence of Hofstede‟s cultural model. The results generally supported the hypothesis that culture impacts user preferences on website interfaces: correlations were found between the website Attractiveness and Long - term Orientation for instance. Moreover, it was possible to provide suggestions on how to insert the methods used in existing localization strategies. However, further research is still needed to make specific conclusions regarding the impact of culture on Web interface design.
