AbstractThis study examined the current situation of Internet development in Myanmar to find out fundamental requirements of governing the Internet usage and infrastructure within the country. The study made two fold investigations to both national and individual levels and how they interconnected to each other in Myanmar. Based on the analysis of the number of Internet users, number of ISPs, and current communication infrastructure, the study discusses the current situation of Internet technology development in Myanmar and bring a framework to understanding the interactions among ICT, nation state and individual users. Interviews and questionnaires were used to obtain necessary data from both macro and micro levels. Senior government officials, Internet shop owners and Internet users were targeted as the respondents or the main participants for data collection to get comprehensive data for analysis. The study analyzes how Internet policy and regulation-making are affected by technology factors in the country. It is based on the “state of the art” of Internet usage in Asian-wide level. The results and summary depicted the framework of understanding ICT use in Myanmar. The roles of the Internet in developing countries are critical and significant. In this research, the situation of rare Internet penetration, the nature of Internet policy making, current Internet technology development status and the nature of Internet cafe in Myanmar are studied.
