Abstract | Big Data has been recently focussing a lot of attention and is presented as a major opportunity for companies in several domains or industries. This study presents the challenges and opportunities that Big Data represents in the domain of retail banking. The analysis focuseson churn prediction, a literature survey was performed in order to analyse the current state of the research in this domain and the potential enhancement of the churn prediction models performance based on Big Data is evaluated.By considering the three dimensions of Big Data (volume, velocity and variety) we point out the benefits that a technology such as Hadoop could bring to the improvement of the performance of churn prediction. New variables deriving from social networks are proposed. The introduction of such variables is supported by the theories of the “word-of-mouth” or homophily, more commonly referred as “love of the same”. The scalability of the new variables is considered, especially computation of betweenness centralities which presents great time and space complexity for large networks. Finally alogical architecture is proposed in order to introduce Big Data analytics in the retail banking industry through churn prediction. |
