Abstract | Ground improvement in South of Vietnam was mentioned and carried out in many port projects and deep mixing method (DMM) is a new method being applied for few current projects. Besides slope stability control, settlement reduction was also the aim of the soft ground improvement. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of deep mixing method (DMM). The SP-PSA International Terminal Project is a container port with 1,200m length container berth for 80,000DWT (dead weight tons) vessels, 540,000m² area of land for container stacking yard, and others. In this project the cement deep mixing method (DMM) and the arch action low improvement ratio cement column (ALiCC) method were carried out. Monitoring of measured data and subsequent analyses were performed to evaluate the effectiveness of th e method and to check improvement quality of DMM pile with surface treatment. A full scale test was carried out by surcharging to design load and the elastic and long-term settlement were verified. Another location using preloading method with PVD at site was used to compare with the performance of the cement deep mixing method (DMM). It was found that the vertical settlement and lateral movements of DMM piles were reduced up to 95% compare to the PVD method. Moreover, the presence of surface treatment reduced the stress concentration ratio due to increase arching effect. Consequently, the stress transfer to DMM increased. |
