Series Statement
AbstractConsolidation characteristic of deposit soil is always a big interesting field. In construction side, its behavior due to the load of construction need to be controlled for safety and cost. Particularly, soft soil existing within zone of construction load pressure need to be treated. Thai Binh clay layer is a weak layer underlying The Thai Binh thermal power plant with a thickness about 10m. This clay was investigated, the construction designer has applied PVD combine with vacuum method to improve strength of this clay layer. This method is related to horizontal coefficient of consolidation. The research data shows The Ch, Khvalue comes from Dissipation test, under the access pore water pressure is about 5 times higher than static pore water pressure, values vary correspond with those from CRS-R. The Ch= (4.14 ÷ 12.7) x 10-3cm2/s, the Kh=(1.01 ÷ 3.97) x 10-7cm/s,along the elevation from -15 ÷ -20m. According to CRS-R results, Ch= (1.5 ÷ 5.36).10-3cm2/s; Kh= (0.42 ÷ 0.88) .10-7cm/sThe ratio of Ch/Cv= (1.70 ÷ 2.60) and Kh/Kv= (1.20÷ 2.26) fromCRS-R and CRS-V test with elevationfrom -15 ÷ -20m.Based on the graphs Cvfrom Oedometer and CRS-V are very close, therefore, ratio of Cv,CRS-V/ Cv,oed.is approximate 1 time through the test. This study concentrates on subsoil characterization by conventional method and Cone penetration test and apply new equipment CRS to determine the coefficient of consolidation for soft Thai Binh clay layer (Ch, Cv) under the given rate of strain 0.0032mm/min. The consolidation characteristic such as pre-consolidation pressure (Pc) and fluctuation of Ch, Cvunder different rates of strain should be focused in next studies. Horizontal coefficient of consolidation is also compared with back analysis from observed data
