AbstractA series of CPTu was carried to estimate the undrai ned shear strength, S u of the clay layer existing under the Thai Binh project area. The cone factor N kt is considered as important empirical factor to affect the result of CPTu. In t his study, N kt of a clay layer is back- calculated using the reference undrained shear stre ngth obtained from field vane shear test and consolidation triaxial tests. It is observed th at N kt of the investigated layer varies in a small range and the average value of 17.67 can be u sed for predicting the undrained shear strength of the layer in CPTu. N ke value is calculated in this study, but it is not recommended to use this parameter in CPTu caused th e high variation within the layer.
