Series Statement
AbstractIn the past 20 years,to meet the increasing energy demands, a series of thermal power plants have been built. One of which is the Long Phu Thermal Power Plant, located in Soc Trang province, South of Vietnam. The plant is founded on the soft clay deposit of the Mekong Delta. Therefore, determination of the geotechnical properties of soft clay deposit at this site is very important for the design and construction work.In this research study, data from laboratory and field tests were collected. Based on data analysisa complete subsoil profile was constructed which consist of five (5) layers.(1)Fill sand (from the surface to about 5m) is indentified as brownish grey, yellowish grey, loose;(1a) The upperfirm fat clay layer is indentified as brownish grey, yellowish grey. The thickness changes from 0to 2.1m; (2) Brownish grey, blackish grey is soft to very soft clay. This layer was encountered in all boreholes. Its thickness is around 15m; (3) Brownish grey, yellowish grey, firm to very stiff clay;(4) Medium dense to dense sand with clayey sand.An emphasis was placed on estimation of undrained shear strength of the thick soft clay layer, from 1 to 16 in depth, based on lab and field tests (Undrained unconsolidation, direct shear, unconfined compression test, vane shear test, Menard pressuremeter test, piezocone test). Theundrained shear strength obtained from vane shear test is quite good and they should be consider for design.
