Series Statement
AbstractThe Lao People's Democratic Republic (PDR) is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia. A third of the population of Laos lives below the international poverty line which means living on less than US$1.25 per day. Laos is a low-income economy, with one of the lowest annual incomes in the world. In the past decade, the World Bank has assessed that “the rapid growth of the natural resources sectors has transformed Laos’ economic landscape” (World Bank, 2013). In t his period, the value of mining production has increased from almost zero to over $1 billion today. Mining accounts for nearly 50% of exports and 10% of government revenue. The most important impacts of mining on the environment are fro m water pollution caused by water related environmental processes. The purpose of this research study is to present erosion protection and sediment control that will significantly reduce the environmental impact from runoff water at KTL exploration study site, in Phon savan town, Xiengkhouang province, Lao PDR during to the exploration operations. The data collected to analysis of this problem including laboratory test results, geological map, and rainfall near study site. Also site inspection was performed to evaluate the erodibility of residual soil, and to evaluate and determine effective and economical solution for control surface soil erosion at the site. The evaluated result shows that the s oils at study site are low to high erosive potential. Lots of s oil erosion and landslips occurred along drilling pads, access tracks, and hill slopes. The main types of soil erosion are sheet, rill and gully erosion. Each area has a different erosion condition, so select ion of suitable erosion control measures is important. All erosion control measures applied in study site was successfully and properly installed, and it brings more benefit to economy a nd less impact to environment.
