E-safety awareness and its implications to users of online social networks : a study based in the Asian context

AbstractOnline Social Networks have risen in popularity in recent years and has rapidly spread across the globe, resulting in millions of people joining these sites annually. Online Social Networks provide tremendous amount of user experience and benefits to the users which they have never ever dreamed of few years back. The continuous advancement in intern et technologies such as Web 2.0 technologies will result in increased user experience and eventually attracting more and more users to these sites. Nonetheless, Social networks can become a privacy intruder and creator of unwanted menace if the users lacked prope r awareness on e-risks posted by these networks. More and more government organisations and companies are in the process of educating the users to be more aware of the potential e-risks posted by these social networks. In recent years se veral incidents of privacy and security related threats have emerged in online so cial networks which have grabbed the attention of the world media. This study adapts a case research me thodology to examine and understand the level of e-safety awareness currently exist among the members of the online social networks in the Asian context. The study will also help the users to increase their awareness level related to online information revelation while using these social networks. The da ta collection was conducted through an extensive online and offline survey am ong the members of the Asian student community in order to determine the level of e-safety awareness exists among the users. The empirical evidence confirms that the user awareness on e-safety is quite high among the members; however they contin ue to share unprecedented amount of information online; because for them the overall benefits of using the online social networks outweigh the risks. Finally, the st udy highlights areas where further research is needed in the field of e-safety awareness in online social networks.
