AbstractThe Thailand automotive industry is considered to b e one of the biggest industries in Thailand in term of both export value and the si ze of the industry which will surpass electric and appliance sector in few years to come. As usually, emerging economy like Thailand which pursues even developmen t approach, small and medium enterprise was being ignored. The impact of financial crisis in 1997 increased the awareness of government towards the d evelopment of SMEs including the ones that engaged in automotive indus try which are considered to be supportive industry. Using the influences from industrial linkage to lea d the developing process in the industry is one of main government industrial devel opment strategies, which is the main focus in this research consisting of four main purposes; accessing to role of government’s assistances toward industrial linka ge, exploring the factors that effect on developing industrial linkage in automoti ve industry of Thailand, identifying the main issues in the industry and pro vide recommendation on improving government’s assistances. As qualitative research study, in-depth interview a nd observation are main research methods applied towards two main governmen t offices that directly response for providing institutional services enhan cing the development of industrial linkage within the industry along with o bservation for access to their operational environment as same as the private sect or through industrial real estate. The result of the study has shown that the limitations of governmental institutes who provide assistant services to Thai a utomotive SMEs highly related to performance of SMEs especially in term of techno logical and human capital aspects along with institutional design structure.
