Abstract | Oil is one of the most important economic inputs in the world economy as it is the major source of energy. The changes of oil price would affect businesses and firms’ cost structure which eventually affects performance and profitability. Since stock market will fully reflect all of the information that could influence the firms’ fundamental, thus the assets price should be adjusted by not having to wait until the predicted effects really happen. This study aims to examine the impacts of the changes of oil price on investors’ behavior in four periods between 2000 and June 2011. Sectoral indices from the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) are used to represent investors’ behavior. Relationship between the growth of oil prices and sectoral indices from SET is found in the four periods of the study. That is, oil price changes can influence investment decision in SET and its influence varies from sector to sector, and period to period according to the different characteristic of oil market. The Granger-causation is also found from oil prices to stock indices which confirm the result in the sectors which have high correlation coefficient between them. Asymmetries in the effect of the changes of oil prices in hike and fall period toward secctoral indices are also found. There is no significant difference between the effect of international oil prices and domestic oil prices toward investors’ behavior in SET |
