AbstractSince 1984, Pakistan has been the recipient of a series of loans from the IMF and this has been a significant factor in shaping the Pakistan economy and economic system. The purpose of this study is to make an objective evaluation of the impact of the IMF on the economy of Pakistan, with a special emphasis on crucial economic indicators such as exchange rate, current account, balance of payment, output growth, inflation and debts, during the period 1984 – 2013. While some amount of existing literature have attempted to understand the impacts of IMF in Pakistan, this study proposes the use of new methodologies, namely, analysis of time series data from 1984 – 2013 and the application of ginger causality to determi ne the impacts of inflow and repayment of loans for the Pakistani Economy. Results suggest that there is unidirectional causality between IMF loan receipts to current account. Similarly, there is also unidirectional causality between repayments to CPI. How ever, for other variables the results are insignificants and there is no causality. The In VAR model impulse response function is used to further examined the causality and it was found there is insufficient evidence to conclude the impact of IMF loan on m acroeconomic variables of Pakistan
