AbstractThis research provides an optlIl1lzation procedure to solve the multicast routing and wavelength assignment (MC-RWA) problem in a multi-fiber optical wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network that can recover from a single-link failure using joint routing of working and backup traffic with shared protection. To minimize service disruptions during a failure recovery, two protection strategies based on the concept of light-trees are proposed. The first technique, called light-tree reconfiguration (LTR) protection, computes a new light-tree for each multicast session affected by the failure. The second technique, called optical branch reconfiguration (OBR) protection, restores a logical connection between each pair of adjacent multicast members disconnected by the failure. An integer linear programming (ILP) formulation that minimizes the total number of fibers required for both working and backup traffic is performed; it takes into account the wavelength continuity constraint and the limited splitting degree of multicast-capable optical crOSS-COlmects (MC-OXCs). Traffic is assumed static, with no existing background traffic. Solving the problem optimally shows a high complexity, and gives few results within twenty-four hours of calculation. Thus approximation techniques are proposed to make the problem more computationally solvable for large networks. Eventually, approximation of LTR gives satisfactory results while approximation of OBR requires further study.
