AbstractWe present a novel approach for inter-session network coding based on the concept ofpoison-remedy. One unique feature of the proposed approach is that multicast and unicastsessions can be coded jointly. To do so, we apply intra-session coding of multicast sessionsin the first layer. For the second layer, we break each multicast session into multipleunicast sessions referred to as subjective unicast sessions. These subjective unicast sessionsare then coded with unicast sessions using the existing poison-remedy approach. Toevaluate the performance of the proposed approach, we conduct numerical investigationsof the session throughputs under the minimum bandwidth constraint as well as the max-min fairness constraint. The results are obtained from random traffic scenarios in ahoneycomb network topology. Compared to the existing poison-remedy approach, which isknown to provide throughput gains in a small percentage of random traffic scenarios, weobserve from various scenarios that the proposed approach can increase the percentage ofscenarios with throughput gains from the range of 1-5 % to approximately 5-10% under theminimum bandwidth constraint, and from the range of 4-8% to 14-15% under the max-minfairness constraint.
