AbstractThis research provides an optimization procedure to solve the multicast routing and wavelength assignment (MC-RWA) problem in a multi-fiber optical wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) multicast capable network that can recover from a single link failure. The failure recovery scheme considered is shared link protection using p-cycles. Full protection and partial protection for MC-RW A using p-cycles are proposed. All destinations of each multicast session are protected in full protection, while partial protection guarantees protection to only a subset of destinations of each multicast session. For full protection, two different kinds of working light trees (LTs) are used, flow conservation (FC)-based working LTs and optical branch (OB)-based working LTs. To provide p-cycle protection, non-joint optimized design of p-cycle-based link protection (NJOP) in which working LTs are found before providing the protection and joint optimized design of p-cycle-based link protection (JOP) in which finding working LTs and providing the protection are found at the same time are introduced. All the optimization problems considered take into account the wavelength continuity constraint. The problem of partial protection is then formulated based on JOP for FC-based working LTs, which is the most efficient for full protection in term of the number of total fibers used.
