AbstractThis research investigates the performance of the constraint based path selection algorithms including Heuristic Multi Constraint Optimal Path (H_MCOP) and Modified Heuristic Multi Constraint Optimal Path (MH_MCOP) algorithms. We constrain the algorithms by the requirement on the signal quality of each selected path. The signal quality can be obtained directly from the Network Management System (NMS) database via the Bit Interleaved Parity (BIP) information. The performance improvement of path selection via the pre-processing pruning step is explored. Furthermore, instead of using the hop count as a routing metric, we propose a cost function that reflects the link utilization. These methods allow us to improve the performance without increasing the complexity of path computation. It is observed that the H_RSP and MH_MCOP algorithms can solve multi constraint problems efficiently with the guaranteed signal quality. Both the pruning step and the cost function metric significantly improve the performance of all types of path selection algorithms considered. In addition, the comparative behaviors of the path selection algorithms under homogeneous and non-homogeneous traffic are found to be similar. Finally, simulation results for dynamic and static traffic are consistent in terms of the performance improvement.
