Abstract | Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) is one type of Passive Optical Network (PONs) that uses Ethernet frames as data units. The EPON architecture consists of an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) at a central office (CO) and multiple Optical Network Units (ONUs) located at customer premises. In an EPON, collisions may occur among upstream transmission from different ONUs. Therefore, a dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm is needed to support multiple ONUs. While various researchers make different assumptions on traffic statistics in analyzing the performances of EPONs, to the best of our knowledge, no report is given to show the comparison of performance results under various types of traffic statistics. This research study focuses on upstream transmissions and considers an EPON with single - state buffers at ONUs. For DBA algorithms, the gated service and the limited service are considered. We develop a simulation program using MATLAB to study three types of packet arrival processes: Poisson, Pareto and Pareto ON - OFF. The simulation results from our simulation experiments show the mean packet delay for different traffic loads and different numbers of ONUs. |
